Beautiful champagne powder has been falling all week in the High Country and if you haven’t been out on the slopes or the trails yet, today is the day to do it. There is a high of 42 degrees predicted today, a wonderful change from the bitter single temperatures earlier in the week and the perfect backdrop to enjoy not only the snow but also the Town of Frisco’s 9th Annual Wassail Days.
What is Wassail you ask? The simple answer is that it is a spiced cider, which doesn’t really sound that exciting but, here in Frisco we’ve turned spiced cider into a competition. “From December 2 – December 11, 2016, local businesses serve up their own secret version of wassail. Guests are encouraged to taste at least 12 different types of wassail at 12 different locations and fill their ’12 Sips of Wassail Card.’ Once the “12 Sips” card is filled out guests can turn them in at the Frisco/Copper Information Center in exchange for a commemorative Frisco Wassail Days mug. So, basically you can shop, have lunch and sample Wassail! It’s pretty good too.
If you’re looking for a place to take the kids, you can begin the day by having breakfast with Santa at the Backcountry Brewery. The event begins at 8:30am and benefits Summit County Pre-School. Reservations are required but if you didn’t plan that far ahead you can still visit with Santa from 11:00 – 1:00pm at the Frisco Historic Park! Pictures are greatly encouraged, so you can get that last minute holiday card out to your family and friends.
If Wassailing, shopping and Santa don’t do it for you and you’re heading to the mountain or battling the crowds in Breckenridge for the Dew Tour, that’s fine, just get back to Frisco by 3:00pm so you can participate or spectate for the Ugly Holiday Sweater Challenge at the Frisco Nordic Center. According to the town, the Ugly Holiday Sweater Challenge, “celebrates all things holiday with a tongue in cheek challenge”. Participants will come out in their “best” worst holiday sweater, strap on cross country skis or snowshoes (both available for rent $10 at the Nordic Center if you need them) and make their way through a 1.5km obstacle course created by local businesses. Obstacles range from the limbo to snow angels and non-alcoholic eggnog shooter. The cost of registration is $15.00 for adults and canines and children are free, so the whole family can get into the act. There are even prizes for the ugliest sweaters with awards and an after party at Grecos Pastaria. And after all that, there will be carolers on Main Street from 4:00pm – 6:00pm to spread holiday cheer.
Well that should keep you busy today and provide you a great afternoon when the next storm rolls in around 2:00pm. Have fun out there and maybe we’ll see you Wassailing!
